The stable sense of being oneself is not a small feature of the mind. It is a large and continuously maintained achievement of an integrated nervous system. Under conditions of chronic threat, dissociation, or overwhelming grief, the achievement can loosen — identity fragments, feels unreal, or reorganises around survival roles. Recovery, when it comes, is not a return to a previous static self but the emergence of a more spacious pattern that can carry more of who a person is at once. Identity in the NSI framework is a shape a nervous system holds, not a fixed object. Which is why becoming someone new is possible — and why it is not fast.
