Introduction
People talk about confidence as if it were a trait one either has or lacks. The felt experience of confidence, however, is nothing like a trait. It comes and goes across a day, across weeks, across contexts. What looks like an internal quality is closer to a weather system: the joint output of autonomic tone, hormonal state, and the brain’s running estimate of its own competence. Treating it as a state instead of a trait changes what we can do about it.

It can be lowered (sometimes suddenly) by threat cues, sleep deprivation, low-glucose states, and criticism. None of this makes confidence a trick; it makes it a state responsive to conditions.
Practical Implications
Design for the state, not the trait. Before a high-stakes moment, put yourself in conditions that support ventral vagal engagement (breath, warmth, an unhurried voice, a familiar face). During the moment, notice metacognitive drift — the sudden certainty that you are worse than you are — as a state signal, not a truth. After the moment, restore the state before evaluating it.
