There are years a person can barely reach. Not amnesia, not trauma — just missing. The autobiographical-memory literature is not alarmed.

Explaining these gaps as normal features of reconstructive memory reduces the fear that something is fundamentally broken.

The Science

Conway and Pleydell-Pearce (2000), in Psychological Review, described the self-memory system: autobiographical memories are constructed at retrieval by the interaction of a self that seeks coherence with a large, hierarchically organised knowledge base — with routine, low-emotional-salience periods contributing few durable landmarks. Rubin (2005), in Current Directions in Psychological Science, argued that autobiographical memory draws on multiple basic systems (visual, spatial, verbal, emotional), and that when several of these are impoverished — as in chronic stress or depressive rumination — the resulting memories are thinner and less accessible.
