The intuitive picture of memory is a filing cabinet. The scientific picture is much stranger. Each retrieval is a reconstruction, edited by the current state, biased by what the mind expected to find, and vulnerable to plausible additions that were not there. What survives most vividly are the emotional and somatic contours of an event; the details around them shift over time. Memory’s job was never accurate recording. It was future prediction — giving the organism a useful summary of what to expect next. Understanding memory this way changes everything from how we hold our own past to how we listen to another person’s.
