The gap between knowing what would help and doing it is where most of us live. Behavior is not a downstream product of good ideas; it is the emergent output of a nervous system negotiating priors, states, habits, environments, and predictions of consequence. Willpower is one input among many, and rarely the strongest one. Behavior change that lasts almost always involves changing more than the person’s intentions — changing the environments, the states, the relationships, the priors. The intent to act differently is real. It is also not enough on its own, and that is not a moral failing.
