Perception feels like a window. Neuroscience has, over decades, made it clear that perception is closer to a painting the brain is finishing in real time. Every act of seeing, hearing, feeling, and remembering is a construction that begins with a prior and is only lightly corrected by the world. Two people can share an event and walk away with two irreconcilable perceptions, neither of them lying. This is not a defect of the mind but a design that made sense for an animal that had to act quickly on incomplete information. Learning to notice a perception as a perception — rather than as the fact of the matter — is one of the highest-leverage moves a person can make.
