Why Does Leaving Feel Different Than Arriving?

The asymmetry is strange. Leaving a chapter comes with a specific ache that arriving into the next one does not resolve. It seems like it should. It rarely does.

Why This Matters

Naming the asymmetry helps us stop reading it as a mistake and start reading it as information about how the human nervous system handles endings and beginnings.

The Science

Wilson and Gilbert (2005), reviewing affective forecasting in Current Directions in Psychological Science, documented the impact bias — the tendency to overestimate both the intensity and the duration of future emotional reactions, largely due to focalism (over-focusing on the imagined event) and the failure to anticipate how quickly the mind makes sense of new circumstances. Kahneman and colleagues (1993) demonstrated the peak-end rule: retrospective evaluations of experiences are dominated by the peak affect and the ending, not by the average — which is why the last hour of a chapter can carry disproportionate weight in memory.

Current Research

Contemporary work extends these findings into life transitions, showing that neither the pain of leaving nor the relief of arriving lasts as long as anticipated.

Practical Implications

For anyone in transition: give the leaving its weight without letting it argue with the choice. Give the arriving time to be arrived-at. Both feelings will move.
