Brickman, Coates, and Janoff-Bulman (1978), in a landmark JPSP study, compared lottery winners, spinal-cord-injury survivors, and controls and found that both extreme groups returned closer to baseline happiness than folk theory would predict — pointing to hedonic adaptation as a core feature of human affect.
