The Science

Phelps (2004), in Current Opinion in Neurobiology, synthesised the evidence that the amygdala modulates hippocampal consolidation of episodic memory in proportion to emotional arousal — emotionally charged material is preferentially retained. Kensinger (2007), in Current Directions in Psychological Science, extended this with the finding that emotional arousal enhances memory for central emotional detail while sometimes reducing memory for peripheral factual detail — producing the characteristic pattern of remembering the feeling with more clarity than the facts.
