What we call attention is the nervous system deciding, moment by moment, what enters awareness and what does not. It is not a spotlight we command. It is a competition between top-down goals, bottom-up salience, autonomic state, and history. What captures attention shapes what we notice, remember, learn from, and can eventually act on. Under threat, attention narrows to danger; in safety, it widens to include beauty, complexity, and the faces of others. A great deal of what looks like personality — who someone notices, what they miss, what they cannot stop watching — is a signature of an attentional pattern trained by a nervous system’s history.
