John Bowlby’s original insight — that the human infant is biologically built to seek proximity to a caregiver — has since been refined by half a century of research, but the core has held. The nervous system organises itself, in the first years of life, around the caregivers it can and cannot count on. Those early patterns become templates for what closeness is, whether it is safe, and what to do when it goes wrong. Templates are not destiny; they can be updated. But they are also not decorations. They are the shape of the first relationship the nervous system ever knew, and it uses them to interpret every relationship that follows.
