The Science

Baumeister, Bratslavsky, Finkenauer, and Vohs (2001), in Review of General Psychology, synthesised evidence across relationships, memory, emotion, learning, and social behaviour showing that bad is stronger than good in virtually every domain examined — a pervasive asymmetry with adaptive origins. Rozin and Royzman (2001), in Personality and Social Psychology Review, distinguished four related asymmetries in the negativity bias — negativity potency, greater negativity growth, negativity dominance, and negative differentiation — and argued for their status as a general design principle of the mind.

Current Research

Contemporary work continues to test how the negativity bias can be partly counteracted through deliberate positive-memory rehearsal, gratitude practice, and structured recall.
