Sisk and colleagues (2018), in two Psychological Science meta-analyses, examined the growth-mindset literature and found weak but real effects on academic achievement, with meaningfully larger effects among students with low socioeconomic status or who were academically at risk. Yeager and Dweck (2020), synthesising the debate in American Psychologist, concluded that mindset effects are real but context-dependent — rejecting both the initial hype and the subsequent dismissal, and pointing to the specific conditions under which malleable-view interventions actually work.
