Humans do not fully regulate alone. Even the biology of a well-regulated adult nervous system is a residue of having been co-regulated by others across a lifetime — a caregiver’s voice as an infant, a friend’s presence in a hard year, a beloved’s slow breath in the dark. Chronic isolation registers as a low-grade emergency in the body; belonging registers as a broad permission to rest. Connection is not sentimental in the NSI framework. It is one of the strongest interventions available to a nervous system — and one of the most reliably overlooked.
