Introduction

The strongest culture is the culture we no longer notice we are inside. It has become the shape of our perception, our self-reference, and the priors we call “obvious.”

Recognizing culture as neural pattern reframes cross-cultural understanding, migration, and clinical work — and dissolves the fiction of a culture-free science of the mind.

The Science

Kitayama and Uskul (2011), in their Annual Review synthesis, argued that culture shapes brain and behavior through the repeated engagement of specific tasks that are afforded and rewarded in a given cultural context — producing measurable differences in neural response to self, others, and objects. Han and Ma (2014) meta-analyzed 35 fMRI studies comparing East Asian and Western participants and found systematic differences in the neural systems recruited for social and non-social tasks: East Asian participants showed stronger activation in dorsomedial prefrontal cortex and temporoparietal junction during social cognition, while Western participants more strongly recruited anterior cingulate and insula.

Current Research

Cultural neuroscience is now extending beyond East-West comparisons into caste, class, religion, and generation, sharpening the picture of culture as a specific and modifiable neural signature.

Practical Implications

For anyone working across cultures: the differences you meet in others are not always disagreements. They are sometimes the priors of a different nervous system, shaped by a different set of daily tasks.

**"Culture is external."** It is external only in the sense that a river is external to the fish. **"Neuroscience is universal."** Some of it is. Much of it is culturally patterned.
