Trope and Liberman (2010), in Psychological Review, formalised construal-level theory: psychological distance (temporal, spatial, social, hypothetical) is a single dimension along which events are represented more abstractly at greater distance and more concretely at closer range, with corresponding effects on thought, feeling, and behaviour. Van Boven, Kane, McGraw, and Dale (2010), in JPSP, showed experimentally that emotional intensity reduces perceived psychological distance — vivid recall can pull a distant event into felt proximity.
