The Biology of Assumptions

An assumption is a prediction that has stopped being questioned. The brain uses them constantly to save energy — and pays for them constantly, too.

Introduction

To think without assumptions would be impossible. Every act of perception uses them; every act of language depends on them; every relationship runs on shared ones. But assumptions have a life cycle: what began as a useful shortcut can survive long past its usefulness, run quietly beneath awareness, and shape decisions in ways the person making them cannot see.

Why This Matters

A great deal of interpersonal difficulty is not disagreement about the visible — it is invisible assumption meeting invisible assumption. Making assumptions surfaceable is one of the highest-leverage moves any nervous system can make.

The Science

Under a predictive-processing account (see *Why Your Brain Is Not an Objective Recorder*), assumptions are priors that have accumulated enough weight to dominate incoming data. Kahneman and Tversky’s foundational work on heuristics documented how these priors compress reasoning into fast, near-automatic judgments: availability, representativeness, anchoring. These heuristics are largely useful; they become dangerous when applied outside the domains that trained them. Work on implicit social cognition — including but not limited to Greenwald and colleagues’ work on the Implicit Association Test — has demonstrated that many culturally trained associations operate without the person’s explicit endorsement and can influence perception, memory, and decision even when the person’s explicit values are the opposite. The mechanism is not moral failure; it is the ordinary machinery of a predictive brain trained by culture.

Current Research

A robust literature on debiasing has clarified what does and does not reduce the influence of automatic assumptions. Willpower alone does not reliably help. What does help: procedural structures (blind review, structured interviews), sustained new exposures that update the underlying priors, and slowing decisions in the domains where the assumptions are most likely to misfire.

Practical Implications

The simplest tool is the sentence “I am assuming that…” followed by whatever the current inference is. Making the assumption visible does not remove it, but it moves the assumption from operating on the perceiver to being one of many things the perceiver can hold.

**“I don’t make assumptions.”** Everyone does. The alternative is not thinking. **“If I try hard enough, I can be assumption-free.”** No. The alternative is not the absence of priors but the presence of awareness that priors are running.
