Schiller and colleagues (2010), in a landmark Nature study, showed that when a fear memory is briefly reactivated, a window opens in which new, non-fearful information can be incorporated into the memory during reconsolidation — producing a lasting reduction in fear expression that persisted for at least a year. Lane, Ryan, Nadel, and Greenberg (2015), in Behavioral and Brain Sciences, argued that this reconsolidation mechanism may unify how enduring change happens across otherwise different psychotherapies: the therapy reactivates the old emotional memory, introduces new emotional experience while it is labile, and the updated meaning is what consolidates.
