Bower (1981), in a landmark American Psychologist review, documented mood-congruent memory: material learned in or associated with a given emotional state is preferentially retrieved when that state recurs, biasing recall in the direction of current mood. Watkins (2008), in Psychological Bulletin, extended the picture with a synthesis of repetitive thought, showing that unconstructive rumination during low mood further narrows access to positive autobiographical material.

Contemporary work is testing structured recall practices (specific-positive-memory exercises) as interventions in depression, with promising early results.
