It feels obvious that seeing is receiving. Look at the world and the world enters. Neuroscience has, over the past two decades, made that intuition harder to maintain.

Why This Matters

If perception is construction, then two honest people can meet the same moment and walk away with two different worlds. Understanding this is the ground beneath most conflict, most miscommunication, and most change work.

The Science

Clark’s (2013) synthesis of predictive processing described the cortex as a hierarchical prediction machine in which top-down predictions meet bottom-up sensory input, and only the mismatch — the prediction error — travels upward. de Lange, Heilbron, and Kok (2018) reviewed the evidence for how expectations specifically shape perception, documenting effects at nearly every level of the visual system, from primary visual cortex to decision-making stages, and describing the Bayesian logic by which the brain integrates prior knowledge with sensory evidence.

Current Research

Recent work refines the theory (not everything is best described as prediction) but the general framework has held: what we see is dominated by what our brain expected to see.

Practical Implications

For anyone in disagreement: the other person is not necessarily lying or dense. Their prior may be different. For change work: updating a prior is slower than updating an intention.
