What If We Asked Better Questions?

Questions are not neutral. Socratic questioning and motivational interviewing measurably outperform argumentation on both symptom change and behaviour change.

Introduction

A well-formed question can do work that a hundred assertions cannot. Clinical and behavioural evidence has begun to show why: certain kinds of question recruit the parts of a person capable of updating, while certain kinds of statement recruit defence.

Why This Matters

Reframing questioning as a specific technology — rather than a style — makes it teachable and gives clinicians, teachers, and parents a real tool that outperforms lecture.

The Science

Braun, Strunk, Sasso, and Cooper (2015) measured therapist use of Socratic questioning in cognitive therapy for depression and found that greater use of Socratic questioning predicted greater session-to-session symptom improvement, even after accounting for therapeutic alliance. Lundahl and colleagues (2013) meta-analysed 48 randomised trials of motivational interviewing in medical settings and reported significant and sustained improvements in a range of health behaviours, from substance use to medication adherence — an evidence base for asking rather than telling.

Current Research

Contemporary work is refining which specific question types (elaborative, evocative, reflective, values-connected) carry the largest effects.

Practical Implications

For clinicians, teachers, and leaders: replace at least some declarative moves with questions that ask the other person to notice, elaborate, or connect. For anyone: the questions we ask ourselves are the questions our nervous system tries to answer.
