What If You’re Solving the Wrong Problem?

How a problem is framed shapes every intervention that follows. A nervous-system view often reveals that the visible problem is not the operative one.

Introduction

Most stuckness in a life is not a shortage of effort. It is effort well aimed at the wrong target. The person exhausts themselves solving the visible problem, and the visible problem turns out to be a symptom of a different problem that no amount of work on the surface can resolve.

Why This Matters

Framing precedes solving. If the frame is wrong, the solution set is wrong. Naming this pattern — the exhaustion produced by earnest effort at the wrong problem — restores some grace to the person and clears the ground for a more useful question.

The Science

Herbert Simon’s foundational work on human problem-solving established that the way a problem is *represented* is often more decisive than the reasoning applied to it afterwards (Simon, 1990). Kahneman and Tversky’s prospect theory showed that people’s judgments and choices are systematically shaped by the *frame* in which options are presented, not only by their objective content (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979). In predictive-processing terms, the problem the brain is trying to solve is generated by the priors already in the model. When those priors are outdated, the wrong problem is what gets worked on. In the nervous-system view, the situation compounds. A dysregulated nervous system narrows perceptual and cognitive breadth (a well-documented consequence of sympathetic dominance), which reduces the space in which alternative framings can be seen at all. The person becomes efficient at solving the frame they can see and cannot see the frame they are inside.

Current Research

Work across cognitive psychology, decision science, and clinical practice converges on the same finding: reframing interventions consistently outperform pure information or exhortation. Successful therapy, coaching, and organizational change repeatedly turn on a reframing move — usually from an individual-behaviour frame to a systemic or relational one — that opens actions the previous frame did not contain.

Practical Implications

When effort is not paying off, the question that most often unlocks progress is not "how do I try harder" but "what am I actually trying to solve, and is that the operative problem." Naming the operative problem is often relational, developmental, or physiological rather than behavioural — and the intervention shifts accordingly.

Common Misconceptions

**"If I just push harder, I’ll break through."** Sometimes. Often, harder effort at a mis-framed problem consolidates the mis-framing. **"Reframing is just semantics."** No. Reframing changes what actions become visible. That changes outcomes materially. **"There’s always a right frame."** Not exactly. There are more and less useful frames for a given situation, and a useful frame is one that opens actions the person can actually take.
