We tend to think of regulation as something an individual practices. But long before a person meets a breathing exercise, they are inside a community whose collective rhythms are already tuning their physiology — for better or for worse.

Christakis and Fowler’s (2013) synthesis of longitudinal network studies documents that emotional and behavioural states — loneliness, obesity, cooperation, mood — spread across social networks up to three degrees of separation. Wiltermuth and Heath (2009) demonstrated experimentally that synchronous group activity increases cooperation and social attachment independent of positive affect, pointing to a direct autonomic pathway from group behaviour to prosocial physiology. Together the two lines suggest that community is not a metaphor for connection but a measurable substrate for state transfer.
