The Science

Coan, Schaefer, and Davidson (2006), in Psychological Science, ran a landmark fMRI study in which women anticipating an electric shock showed markedly reduced threat-related brain activation when holding a partner’s hand — an effect graded by relationship quality. Beckes and Coan (2011), in Social and Personality Psychology Compass, generalised the finding as Social Baseline Theory: the human brain has evolved to treat the presence of trusted others as the metabolic baseline against which threat is calculated — solitude is the metabolically expensive state, not company.

Current Research

Contemporary work is testing whether digital, telephonic, and even imagined presence of a safe other confers a fraction of the neural buffering effect — with promising early results.

For anyone: certain people are not merely pleasant — they are physiologically less expensive to be around. Recognising them, and returning to them, is not indulgence but sound resource allocation.
