Grandmother’s Hands

“A pair of hands can carry an entire lineage.

An elderly Vietnamese woman holds her embroidery. The image lingers on her hands — the small movements, the practiced patience, the memory of every stitch that came before this one. She is not making a piece of fabric. She is passing something down.

There is a knowledge that lives only in the body. It cannot be taught in books. It moves from grandmother to daughter to granddaughter through nearness, repetition, and time. Most of us carry a version of this in us — gestures we did not invent, phrases we did not write, the way we lay a table because someone once did it that way with us.
