Definition
Synaptic plasticity is the ability of synapses — the connections between neurons — to strengthen or weaken over time in response to activity. It is one of the primary cellular mechanisms of learning and memory.

Synaptic plasticity is the biological floor beneath every claim about brain change. Understanding it accurately protects against both overclaim and dismissal.
The Science
Long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) are the classic forms. NMDA receptors, AMPA receptor trafficking, and protein synthesis are involved. Kandel and colleagues won the Nobel Prize for related work on Aplysia and mammalian synapses.
