Definition

Brain development is not confined to childhood. The human brain undergoes structural, functional, and connective change from prenatal life through late adulthood, with different processes dominating at different ages.

Why it matters

The idea that the brain is “finished” by age three, or by 25, is a persistent myth. Understanding development as lifelong changes what is possible — at every age.

The Science

Neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, myelination, pruning, and network reorganization occur across the lifespan, with different tempos in different regions. The prefrontal cortex matures into the mid-twenties. Adult neuroplasticity, though slower than childhood plasticity, is substantial and sustained.

NSI treats development as a lifelong process. Care is never too late; it is only different at different ages.

Clinical Implications

Age-appropriate interventions differ, but the assumption that adult brains cannot change is not supported by contemporary neuroscience.

Practical Application

You are not a finished product. Your nervous system is still learning — and can, with time and appropriate input, unlearn as well.
