Definition

Explicit memory is consciously accessible — what you can put into words. Implicit memory is not — it lives in behavior, sensation, and reflex without requiring narrative.

Why it matters

Much of what shapes daily experience is implicit. People often dismiss reactions they cannot explain, missing information the implicit system is delivering.

The Science

Explicit memory relies on medial temporal structures including the hippocampus. Implicit memory involves basal ganglia, cerebellum, and amygdala circuits that operate largely outside awareness.

The NSI Perspective

NSI honors both memory streams. What you know in words and what you know in body are both real — and they can disagree.

Clinical Implications

Clinicians can help clients recognize implicit learning as a legitimate source of information, even when a story is missing.

Practical Application

When your body reacts without an explanation, do not force the story. The reaction is implicit knowledge showing itself.
