Definition

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a durable increase in synaptic strength following brief, high-frequency stimulation. It is one of the most-studied cellular models of memory formation.

Why it matters

LTP is where "memory" begins to be visible at the cellular level. Understanding it clarifies why learning takes activity, timing, and repetition.

The Science

Discovered by Bliss and Lømo in 1973, LTP has been extensively characterized. It requires NMDA receptor activation, calcium influx, and downstream signaling; late-phase LTP requires protein synthesis and gene expression.
