Definition

Habit learning is the gradual transfer of behavior from goal-directed, prefrontal control to automatic, striatal control. It is a specific form of plasticity that underlies both useful routines and problematic patterns.

The Science

Dorsal striatum, particularly the sensorimotor striatum, supports habitual behavior. The shift from goal-directed to habitual control happens with repetition, especially under stable reward.
