How Astrocytes Support Brain Function

Astrocytes contribute to nearly every major domain of brain physiology. Rather than passive scaffolding, they are active regulators of the conditions under which neurons operate.

§ 1

Homeostasis of the neural environment

Astrocytes regulate extracellular potassium, water balance, and pH — conditions on which neuronal excitability depends.182,183

They recycle neurotransmitters (notably glutamate) to protect neurons from excitotoxicity.185

Synapse modulation

At the tripartite synapse, astrocytes monitor and modulate synaptic communication.184,197

Energy and blood flow

Astrocytes couple neural activity to local blood flow and supply metabolic substrates — including lactate — to active neurons.186

Injury response

Following injury, astrocytes become reactive and participate in containment, debris clearance, and inflammation regulation.190,189
