Traumatic brain injury produces acute mechanical damage and a prolonged secondary phase in which cellular responses shape outcome. Astrocytes are prominent in both.

Acute and subacute roles

Reactive astrocytes help contain injury, regulate ion and neurotransmitter homeostasis, and modulate inflammation.203,190

Chronic consequences

Persistent astrocyte activation may contribute to post-concussive symptoms and long-term neurodegeneration in some patients.
