The History of Astrocyte Research

From Ramón y Cajal to the calcium imaging revolution.

The story of astrocyte research is one of slow accumulation punctuated by technical revolutions. Early anatomists described the cells; mid-century researchers assigned them a supportive role; the last two decades reopened the case.

19th–20th century foundations

The star-shaped morphology of astrocytes was described in the late 19th century. Early observers understood them as structural components of the brain.

The mid-century plateau

For much of the 20th century, astrocytes were treated as passive support cells. The tools of the era did not reward closer inquiry.188


§ 3

The modern revival

Beginning in the late 1990s and accelerating through the 2010s, calcium imaging, transcriptomics, and viral targeting brought astrocytes into the center of the picture.187,180,181
