The blood-brain barrier is a highly selective interface between the circulation and the neural tissue. Astrocytes are a major structural and signaling participant in its formation and maintenance.

Endfeet at the vessel wall

Astrocyte endfeet ensheath cerebral blood vessels and communicate with endothelial cells to help maintain barrier integrity.191,182

Astrocytes influence endothelial tight-junction expression and permeability through continuous biochemical signaling.191

Consequences of dysfunction

BBB dysfunction is implicated in stroke, neurodegenerative disease, and neuroinflammation — and astrocyte responses shape the disease course.183,202
