After stroke, astrocytes participate in containment of injury, regulation of inflammation, and the formation of the glial scar. The same cells may support recovery and, in some phases, constrain it.

Long-term consequences

The glial scar can also impede axonal regrowth, and astrocyte-targeted strategies aim to shift the balance toward repair.202
