Astrocytes influence learning, memory, mood, sleep, pain, and recovery from injury. Their dysfunction is implicated in a growing list of neurological and psychiatric conditions.

Everyday function

Astrocytes contribute to synaptic plasticity, energy delivery, and homeostasis that underlie ordinary cognition.181,186

Disease relevance

Astrocyte dysfunction has been implicated in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, MS, ALS, stroke, TBI, epilepsy, chronic pain, and mood disorders.183,189


§ 3

Therapeutic promise

Astrocyte biology is an emerging therapeutic target. Whether therapies aimed at astrocytes can complement neuron-focused treatments is an active area of investigation.
