Dreamtime Stone

“Some languages do not need to be translated to be understood.

Dots cover a painted stone. Aboriginal Australian artistic traditions call this Dreamtime — a way of speaking about the land, the ancestors, and the interconnectedness of all things that stretches back tens of thousands of years. Each dot is a word in a sentence we may never fully read. And still, we sense the sentence is real.

We have lost, in a lot of modern life, the capacity to accept meaning we cannot fully decode. We want the caption. We want the explanation. We want the takeaway. This piece asks nothing of that impulse. It simply exists — and lets us stand near it.

This sculpture isn’t asking to be interpreted.

It’s asking to be received.
