Mountain Mist

“The mountain is only ever half itself. The rest is mist.

Misty peaks emerge and disappear in the traditional Chinese ink-wash language of shanshui — mountain and water, always together, always partially hidden. This is not a landscape you can fully see. This is a landscape you can only feel your way through.

We treat mystery as if it were a problem to be solved. But shanshui teaches something older — that beauty is often the thing we cannot fully make out. That the not-yet-visible is part of what makes the visible worth looking at.

This painting isn’t about a mountain.

It’s about your relationship with what you do not yet understand.
