Definition

Epigenetics is the study of heritable and reversible modifications that regulate gene expression — how genes are turned on and off — without altering the underlying DNA sequence.

Why it matters

Epigenetics is one of the most important and most misrepresented biological concepts in contemporary discourse. Understanding what it actually is protects both patients and the science.

The Science

Epigenetic mechanisms include DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNA regulation. These mechanisms shape which genes are expressed in which cells at which times. They are biologically real, sometimes environmentally responsive, and often more transient than popular writing suggests.
