Definition

Animal versus human studies in epigenetics differ in methodological control, generalizability, and clinical translation. The two literatures are often blurred in popular discussion.

Why it matters

Findings robust in mice can be nowhere near translation to humans. Confusing the two produces overclaim.

The Science

Rodent studies allow controlled breeding, tissue sampling, and mechanistic dissection. Human studies typically rely on peripheral tissue (blood), correlational designs, and small effect sizes. Extrapolation requires care.
