Definition

Sensitive periods are windows of heightened neural plasticity during which certain experiences shape development more strongly than at other times. They are not do-or-die windows; they are windows of increased leverage.

Why it matters

Misunderstanding sensitive periods as “now-or-never” creates unnecessary despair and parental guilt. Understanding them accurately clarifies what timing does and does not do.

The Science

Language, vision, attachment, and social skills all show sensitive-period effects with different windows and different degrees of closure. Most systems retain some plasticity beyond the sensitive window, though acquisition may become slower or partial.

The NSI Perspective

NSI holds sensitive periods as biological facts to be respected, not as verdicts. Later intervention is often meaningful, even when timing was imperfect.

Clinical Implications

Early intervention has strong evidence in language and attachment. Later intervention remains valuable and evidence-based.

Practical Application

If early years were hard, the story is not written. Nervous systems retain plasticity longer than the popular narrative suggests.
