Why Scientists Once Ignored Astrocytes

The neglect was technological, not ideological.

For most of the 20th century, the neuroscientist’s toolkit was designed to detect the rapid electrical signaling of neurons. Astrocytes, which do not typically fire action potentials, fell outside the range of what those tools could detect.

Microelectrodes, early functional imaging, and standard histological stains privileged fast electrical activity and neuronal cytoarchitecture.188,182

The maturation of calcium indicators, two-photon microscopy, and molecular profiling techniques made astrocyte activity legible — revealing a companion communication system.180,181

A common scientific pattern

Neuroscience is not unique in this arc. Many cell types and biological systems have waited for their imaging revolution. Astrocytes are having theirs now.
