Neurons vs. Astrocytes: What’s the Difference?

Two cell types, one integrated system.

Neurons and astrocytes are often described as opposites: neurons the fast electrical communicators, astrocytes the slow biochemical supporters. The reality is more nuanced. Both are essential, and neither performs the work of the other alone.

Signaling

Neurons communicate primarily through fast action potentials and synaptic release of neurotransmitters, on the millisecond scale.188

Astrocytes communicate primarily through slower intracellular calcium waves and the release of gliotransmitters that can modulate synaptic activity over seconds to minutes.185,187


§ 2

Structure

Astrocytes occupy distinct anatomical domains and contact tens of thousands of synapses each; neurons form axons and dendrites that carry signals across distance.198,180

Role

Neurons carry the fast information; astrocytes shape the environment in which that information is processed. Neither picture is complete without the other.
