PTSD is characterised by intrusive re-experiencing, hyperarousal, and altered threat learning. Established models focus on amygdala–prefrontal circuits; astrocyte contributions are increasingly under investigation.

Astrocyte biology in fear learning

Animal work has implicated astrocyte signaling in the modulation of fear memory and contextual conditioning.195,209

What is not yet claimed

It cannot be inferred from current evidence that astrocyte pathology causes PTSD in humans. It can be inferred that astrocytes are part of the biological system in which trauma-related learning occurs.
