Anxiety disorders involve sustained physiological activation and altered fear-related learning. Preclinical work has begun to identify astrocyte contributions to these processes.

Astrocyte manipulation in amygdala and prefrontal circuits can alter anxiety-related behaviors in animals.196,208

Distance to the clinic

Human evidence is still limited. Anxiety disorders are complex, and astrocyte findings are one thread of a larger biological picture.
