Astrocytes and Depression
A converging line of postmortem, animal, and imaging evidence.
Depression has classically been framed through monoaminergic neurons and neural circuits. Multiple lines of evidence now implicate astrocytes — without displacing existing accounts.

Postmortem findings
Postmortem studies have reported reduced astrocyte density and altered morphology in cortical regions of individuals with major depressive disorder.207

Animal work
Animal studies suggest that astrocyte-derived signaling contributes to depressive-like behaviors.208
§ 3
A careful framing
These findings do not establish that astrocyte dysfunction causes human depression. They add a biological layer to models still centered on circuits, monoamines, and lived experience.
