Written in Wax

“Some art is made by revealing, not by adding.

A pysanka. Every line drawn in wax before any colour touches the egg. The wax resists the dye. Layer by layer, the artist reveals the pattern by protecting parts of the surface from what is coming.

We often think we are made by what happens to us. But some of the most important parts of who we are were made by what we refused to let happen. The lines we drew. The colours we did not let in. The small acts of protecting a part of ourselves that no one else knew we were protecting.

This egg isn’t only about craft.
