Walking Bear

“The carver is not the maker. The carver is the one who agreed to see.

An Inuit soapstone polar bear, mid-walk. Smooth. Dark. Powerful. In this tradition, the carver does not impose the shape. The carver looks at the stone until they see what animal is already inside — and then, patiently, they let the stone reveal it.

We often treat our lives the same way we’ve been taught to treat material — as raw stuff to impose our ideas upon. But some of the most important work is the opposite. Looking long enough at the material of our own life until we see what has always been waiting inside it.

This sculpture isn’t about wildlife.

It’s about what has already been in you all along.
