Hiroshi Tanaka

Hiroshi Tanaka is a master ceramicist whose practice bridges traditional Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetics with contemporary conceptual art. Trained in Bizen and Shigaraki before establishing his own kiln outside Kyoto in 1994, he works exclusively in unglazed stoneware fired with pine ash.

His work has been collected by the Museum of Modern Art (Kyoto), the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Fondation d’Enterprise Hermès. His annual solo exhibitions in Kyoto sell out within hours.

Tanaka-sensei accepts one apprentice every three years. His teaching philosophy is deceptively simple: every crack tells the truth of its making.
