What If We Regulate Each Other More Than Ourselves?

Self-regulation is a residue of a lifetime of coregulation. The idea of the fully independent regulator is a myth of Western psychology, not a fact of biology.

Modern culture prizes self-regulation as a virtue. Modern neuroscience says the fully self-regulating human does not exist. What exists is a nervous system continually calibrated by other nervous systems.

Why This Matters

Naming coregulation accurately reduces shame and reframes the effort of regulation as relational rather than personal.

The Science

Feldman (2007) documented biobehavioural synchrony as the developmental substrate from which self-regulation later emerges. Beckes and Coan (2011) extended the point into adulthood with the social baseline theory: humans are neurobiologically designed to expect regulation from social presence, and social absence increases metabolic cost.

Current Research

Contemporary work continues to erase the sharp line between self- and co-regulation. The distinction is one of degree.

Practical Implications

For anyone struggling with regulation alone: the difficulty is not personal. The strategy that costs less is finding the right other nervous systems to be near.
